Chickens, like tattoos, are very addicting -or so I’ve heard.
Well, I’m not sure either one are truly “addicting” by
definition but I will say that both can be fun, exciting to dream about, and as
soon as you have one (or some), you want
more.
At least that’s what I hear. And given my compulsive behavior about all of my other hobbies, it won't be much different with chickens (this blog post may be proof of that).
I haven’t gotten my chickens yet (though I do have a few
tattoos). The chicks will be here on
March 28, 2016. The coop isn’t quite
ready but we will continue to work on that.
We were supposed to have it done last fall but we tend to get
sidetracked on our projects around here.
So, in March we add 18 new chicks to the mix of dogs, fish
and one barn cat that we inherited when we bought the property. It’s not
exactly a “farm” but it’s a step in the right direction.
For the first few weeks, the chicks will be in a brooder
while they grow some feathers and are able to regulate their own body
heat. Then they will move to the
coop. You can see the progress of CoopaCabana here.
We already have a couple of names picked out. Pearl will be
the white Silkie chicken. Stella Mae will be the frizzle chicken and if we end
up with a rooster, he will be General Tso (although Rod Stewart would be a good name too).
We are planning some old fashioned names for the girls like (Hazel,
Beatrice and Maude). We have a couple of
people who have asked to name one as well.
We are starting out with several breeds. Most will be for eggs, none for meat, and some will be for
fun.
Here is a list of what we have on
order:

Well, that's the flock! Most are brown egg layers and there is no difference in the
eggs other than the shell color.
Hopefully we will have plenty to share!
Be sure to come back and check in on our chickens!
Update!
I added four more to the flock...
